I offer skilled and supportive proofreading, copyediting, and content editing services for general audiences. In addition, I have more than a decade of experience working with authors in academia and think tanks on journal articles, professional reports, theses and dissertations, chapters, and books. I particularly enjoy and specialize in working with authors for whom English is not a first language.
My services include:
- Proofreading — Correct basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. May include changes to meet style guidelines (APA, MLA, etc.), as necessary.
- Copyediting — May include line editing (also called “heavy copyediting”) or regular copyediting (also called “light editing”). In addition to proofreading, copyediting involves sentence-level edits to improve readability and clarity, and avoid repetition. It also involves rewriting tangled sentences and tightening wordy or awkward passages that might hinder the reader.
- Content Editing — Provides feedback and suggestions regarding organizational structure, clarity, and whether or not the intended meaning has been expressed (for example, in articles and case studies, are claims being made that are not supported by the evidence presented?).
- Non-native English — This type of editing involves smoothing out language, rewriting tangled sentences into clear, intelligible text, and making overly wordy passages more concise. I correct spelling, grammar, diction, syntax, consistency, article and preposition use, and the inappropriate use of idioms. In my experience, papers written in or translated into English by non-native-English speakers often need a line edit by someone who understands the subject to become readable without inadvertently changing any meaning. This work can be slow, and therefore may cost more.
Editing Rate: My fee depends upon the complexity and urgency of the project. My rates are standard for the industry, and I strive to provide you with excellent value. Please contact me to discuss your needs.
Contracting Process: I will ask you to provide a sample in Microsoft Word of the work requiring editing, along with some information about your needs for the project. I’ll then review a few pages and provide a description of the services I am able to offer, along with a cost estimate. Following mutual agreement, I will send a work agreement for your signature.
Pro bono editing: I am happy to contribute my editing skills on a low-cost or pro bono basis to grassroots organizations and other good causes that don’t have the wo/manpower or budget for such support otherwise. Please contact me to discuss whether I might be able to help you.
